The Northland college scholarships announces deadline - 15 Jan, 2018

Just recently, Northland high school seniors and others announced they have until Monday, Jan. 15, to apply for college scholarships.

One scholarship available for high school seniors is a $20,000 scholarship from the Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund. The application process takes about two hours, said Patty Salo Downs, executive director of the Alworth Memorial Fund.

"That's a potential payoff of $10,000 an hour," Salo Downs said. "With almost a 30-
percent acceptance rate, applicants have a one-in-three chance of being awarded a $20,000 scholarship. It's difficult to imagine a better use of time."

The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation is also offering more than 60 college scholarships totaling nearly $1 million.

"With the cost of college going up, it is wonderful to create new awards and recognize more deserving students," said Bethany Owen, chair of the community foundation's scholarship committee. "We're excited by the increase in scholarships dedicated to diverse members of our community."
